The forecast had not been looking good, but the rain and gale force winds stayed away. The courts were dry and ready to see some action (writes Nikki Holden, team captain).
Four members of our club made up two pairings for our home match on 21 August against Avenue 3 in the Portsmouth and District LTA Summer League ladies doubles. It was a first-time pairing for Nikki Holden and Katy Bracher, while Elizabeth Williams and Kate Gurl have a strong pedigree.
The first timers Nikki and Katy quickly found their form against Avenue’s second pairing and went on to win the match 6-1, 6-2. There were reverse fortunes however when playing Avenue’s No1 pair. Despite some thrilling rallies and even an ace, it was not enough to seal the deal, with our noble opponents taking the match 6-3, 7-5.
Elizabeth and Kate gave a worthy performance against Avenue’s first pairing, but were defeated 6-2, 6-2. An epic match followed against Avenue’s second pair and went to a nail-biting three sets. After losing the first set 2-6, their teamwork and consistent game play produced the well-earned points to take the match and secure their victory of 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. Final score – Fishbourne 40, Avenue 44.
A thoroughly enjoyable morning of tennis was shared by all with lashings of fair play, good humour and spirit. A delicious match tea followed to round off the day.
