One of the founding members of Fishbourne Tennis Cub has died, aged 94. Betty Stevens made an important contribution to the birth of the club in 1984 and was a regular player into her 80s. Betty celebrated her 80th birthday with a party at the club in 2006, as shown in the photograph. The club has sent ts condolences to Betty’s family.
Honorary member Ron Gawen writes:
Betty was a member right from the start of the tennis club, and was on the committee in the early days. She was a very important committee member of the Fishbourne Playing Fields Association and arranged a meeting with the farmer Mr May. Betty talked him into releasing the land adjoining Blackboy Lane, so the club could purchase the field…and the tennis club was born.
