Mid-way through the season, Fishbourne teams continue to do well in the Portsmouth & District LTA summer tournament. Here are the captains’ mid-term reports:
Sam Hart, men’s doubles, division 4 (weekend only games, no age restrictions):
We are top of the league so far this year, four fixtures played and four won. We have won 14 rubbers and lost just two. Next match is at Fishbourne on 23 July at 10am and we would like as much support as possible. Promotion to higher division is certain for next year and we look forward to that.
Kate Gurl, ladies’ doubles, division 4 (weekend only games, no age restrictions):
We have played seven out of our eight matches, and won four and lost three. Hopefully we will finish second in the league of five clubs. Our last match is on 23 July away to Lee On Solent. Eleven ladies have represented Fishbourne.
Luke McEwen, Masters mixed doubles, division 1 (weekday games, +50 men, +45 women):
We have played four and had every kind of possible outcome: a win, a loss, a losing draw and a winning draw.
Elizabeth Campbell, Masters mixed doubles, division 2 (weekday games, +50 men, +45 women):
The division 2 mixed Masters team are playing with a variety of club members so as many players as possible have a chance to play. We have succeeded in winning two matches but sadly losing three matches. At present we are third equal in the league table with one match to go.
Mandy Davies, Masters ladies’ doubles, division 1 (weekday games, +50 men, +45 women):
Ladies Masters is a new competition for 2017 and proving to be a big success. We have won three and drawn one and are now second in the league. Our crunch match against league leaders, Warsash, is on 25 July.
And an update from Alex Bone on how the juniors are doing:
Fishbourne’s under 14 boys played their last match in the Sussex League and have either finished second or first in division 1 depending on other results.
Next up: the Portsmouth & District winter league!
We will soon be starting to think about teams for the P&D winter league 2017/18, and the club anticipates fielding Fishbourne teams in men’s, ladies’ and Masters’ competitions.
Existing AND NEW players keen to take part are invited to express their interest by dropping the leagues coordinator Bob Murray a brief email at [email protected] Team captains will be announced later in the summer along with the dates of the try-outs.
