Tea, cakes and a trophy too

Some close matches and plenty of friendly competition were the hallmarks of the inaugural club challenge with Southsea Tennis Club in gloriously sunny weather in Southsea on Sunday (20 September). Six mixed pairs from Fishbourne Tennis Club  took on six mixed pairs from Southsea for a great afternoon of tennis in what everyone hopes will now become a regular fixture between the two clubs.

Overall Fishbourne just had the upper hand and the first trophy – the Seaside Trophy? the Southfish Cup? the Seafish Medal? It needs a name! – was awarded to FTC captain Luke McEwen. A fantastic tea in Southsea’s art deco pavilion on the front followed the matches.

‘We always enjoy coming to Southsea to play and so it was a real treat for us all to have such a splendid afternoon,’ said Luke. ‘This is a fine new local competition with the aim of involving lots of members of both tennis clubs who perhaps haven’t played in tournaments before. It’s friendly and it’s fun and we are going to make sure it becomes a regular event. We are certainly looking forward to hosting Southsea in Fishbourne soon to give them a chance to regain the trophy!’

Taking part for FTC were: Gilly  Perrin and Andrew Griffiths, Sue Lord and Trevor Bracher, Katy Bracher and Luke  McEwen, Shaz Morris and David Lord, Nikki Scott and David Holmes, Lesley Kelly and Bob Murray.
