Fishbourne invited to play in exciting new winter competition

Are you over 50 (45 for ladies), available during the day Monday to Friday and want to keep playing tennis through the winter? We have been invited by the Portsmouth District League to enter their new mid week veterans winter league.

As long as you are available during the day, this is a great way to play tennis between October and March.  They’re a really friendly bunch in the league and they’re all local matches.  And you don’t need to be red hot to take part!

  • Mid week matches.
  • Day time play.
  • Men must be 50 or over
  • Ladies must be 45 or over
  • A match consists of 2 mixed rubbers, 1 ladies doubles and 1 men’s doubles.
  • There will be between 6 and 8 matches per team between October and March.
  • Just £5 per team to enter
  • Free awards party!
  • Find out more at  www.portmouthlta.info

Already several players have put their name down. If interested in joining them, please let Luke know by 4 September.

Here’s a bit more background about the competition, from the Portsmouth fixtures secretary:

The Portsmouth & District LTA (P&D LTA) has realised that although there is a vets tennis league in the summer, administered by Hants & IOW, there is very little competitive daytime vets tennis available in Hampshire summer or winter.

It occurred to us that for most clubs involved in weekend league matches, together with their social tennis, courts are largely occupied at weekends and midweek in the evenings during the week, however during the day Monday to Friday it is likely that there is spare capacity. Furthermore, there are probably players that would be able to play weekdays during the day that may not be able to commit to league tennis at night or the weekends. Thus the formation of our Vets Mixed Midweek Daytime League!

The format is teams of two ladies, two men. Matches to consist of two mixed matches (1st pair v 1st pair, 2nd pair v 2nd pair), followed by one ladies match and one mens match. Two courts needed only. Qualifying age 45 for ladies, 50 for men.

Matches to be played during daytime hours Monday to Friday, by agreement between teams but with home team determining most appropriate day and start time dependent on their court usage/availability.

The P&D LTA has made much progress and has grown substantially in the last five years. We were the first league in Hampshire to create a mixed winter league. We have an independent website in which results and tables are updated as soon a results are known. We have a catered awards evening every year for which every team is invited at no cost. Apart from all the trophies and certificates to be given out there are other awards too based on sportsmanship and catering amongst others.

We have looked at the geographical locations of clubs currently outside our league, conscious that we cannot ask teams to travel unreasonable distances. However in addition to the clubs already competing in P&D LTA leagues, we feel it is possible for teams from Southampton (west side) to Chichester and maybe a little way up the A3 to compete in the new “Masters Day League We, therefore, would be delighted if your club would like to enter a team for the forthcoming winter season. An entry fee of £5.00 per team (to include affiliate membership to P&D LTA) would be applicable and would include all the above benefits!

Depending on the amount of entries, it is anticipated there will be between 6- 8 fixtures per season. The winter season will be from October to April.

On behalf of the P&D LTA, I hope we can welcome you to become part of our league and this (hopefully) exciting new initiative.
